Important Reminders:
  1. Students are only permitted to participate in the Semester in Practice Program as third-year law or fourth-year graduating students, i.e. you must be one of your final two semesters - fall or spring.
  2. The Semester in Practice is one semester long. Students are not permitted to enroll in any other classes besides the Semester in Practice in-class 3-credit seminar and the fieldwork.
  3. The limit on out-of-class credits during law school is 25, 19 of which can be externship credits if you are participating in the Semester in Practice program (it is 15 for non sip students).  Students can petition for more externship field credits but whether that petition is granted is not decided by the externship office. You can do your Semester in Practice field work for anywhere from 8 to 12 credits, depending on your available externship credits and credits needed to graduate but you work full time throughout the semester regardless of those credits.
  4. If you are accepted into the Semester in Practice program, you must indicate your interest in writing (email suffices) and submit your Supervisor Acceptance Form by the deadline indicated. If you do not, your position may be offered to another student. Additionally, you must respond in writing by the deadline even if you are declining the offer – this allows us to offer the position to another student at the earliest opportunity. Please be considerate of other students who may hope to enroll in the program if offered a position.
  5. In order to participate in the program, you must have all of the required paperwork into the Legal Externship Program by the dates advertised prior to the semester’s enrollment. Check the Legal Externship Program’s website for the most up-to-date deadlines. Please note: We cannot register you until the Supervisor Acceptance Form has been received (and in some cases, the Supervisor application form).
  6. Once enrolled, students will not be permitted to drop their registration for the Semester in Practice program without the express permission of the Director of Externships.
